Description
Why did Lexus become one of America's biggest luxury success stories, only to struggle in Europe for decades?
When Toyota launched Lexus in 1989, the LS 400 shocked the American luxury market. It was quieter, cheaper, and engineered to compete directly with BMW and Mercedes-Benz. By 1991, Lexus had become America's best-selling luxury import.
But when Toyota brought Lexus to Europe, the same formula didn't work.
Diesel dominated the European market. Company-car taxes favored German brands. BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi already had enormous dealer networks, strong resale values, and decades of brand history. Lexus tried everything—from the GS and IS to diesel engines, hybrids, the IS F and even the legendary $375,000 Lexus LFA.
Yet Europe remained difficult.
This is the story of why Lexus struggled to compete with BMW, Mercedes and Audi in Europe, how diesel shaped the European car market, why the Lexus IS 220d became a major problem, and how Toyota's early investment in hybrid technology eventually put Lexus in a much stronger position.
From the LS 400 and the American luxury market to the LFA, Nürburgring, Dieselgate, hybrid cars and Lexus's modern European strategy, this is the story of Lexus's 30-year battle to win over Europe.
