Description

Nearly 2,000 years ago, someone in ancient Rome carved a strange and insulting image into a wall. It depicted a crucified figure with an animal-like head, while a person named Alexamenos appeared to worship him. What was intended as a cruel joke may have unintentionally preserved a remarkable glimpse into how early Christians and their belief in Jesus were viewed by the Roman world. In this video, we investigate the mysterious Alexamenos Graffito, the person apparently targeted by the mockery, the meaning behind the donkey-headed figure, and what this ancient inscription can tell us about the crucifixion of Jesus and the earliest Christian movement. Could this ancient Roman insult challenge the claim that the crucifixion was merely a later Christian invention? And why would someone mock a man for worshipping a crucified Christ?
