Description

Before the first snow settles, something older than winter stirs. VETRNÆTR — “Winter Nights” — is our journey to the threshold the people of the old North knew well: the moment the bright half of the year gives way to the long dark. Fields lie empty. The last warmth retreats. Smoke rises from the homestead, and the living gather around a fire that must endure what comes next. But these nights were never only about cold. There are places where silence seems crowded. A bench once occupied by a loved one remains empty, yet memory gives it weight. Outside, beyond the doorway, unseen powers are imagined listening. The earth takes what is offered; the household guards what remains. The night becomes a promise: we have not forgotten the land, our dead, or those whose stories brought us here. VETRNÆTR is not a celebration of conquest. It is a song about crossing a boundary. About standing where firelight ends. About the uneasy peace between gratitude and fear, life and death, what we can protect and what we must surrender. Winter comes for everyone. What matters is what we carry into it. ### ❄️ THE MYTHOLOGY & OLD NORSE TRADITION The old Icelandic calendar divided the year into summer and winter halves. Vetrnætr, literally “Winter Nights,” marked the arrival of winter. These autumn days carried ritual significance; medieval Icelandic sources remember feasts and offerings associated with the beginning of the cold season. In *Ynglinga saga*, preserved by Snorri Sturluson, a sacrifice “towards winter” is described as being made for a good year. To those living close to the land, a good year meant more than comfort. It meant enough food, healthy animals, shelter, and the hope of seeing another spring. Another glimpse comes from the skald Sigvatr Þórðarson. In *Austrfararvísur*, he recounts being turned away from a farm in Sweden because an *álfablót* (a sacrifice to the álfar, or elves) was taking place inside. The poem reveals little about the rite itself. That secrecy is part of what still makes it so haunting: a household gathered behind closed doors, while a stranger stood outside. The dísir, female beings associated in Norse tradition with protection, fate, and sometimes ancestry, also received offerings known as *dísablót*. Traditions varied across places and periods; no single description can tell us exactly how every winter rite was performed. Even age could be expressed in winters. Someone might be called thirty winters old, a reminder of how deeply the seasons shaped life in the North. We know only fragments of these old customs. This song is our imagining of their atmosphere, not a reconstruction of one certain ceremony. When the last fire fades, who remains in your memory? What would you offer to the coming darkness? And what would you carry through it? From all of us at Valhalla Drums, may winter find you with a fire to return to and names worth remembering. If this journey speaks to you, share it with someone who still feels the old North in the wind.
