Legendary DJ Sam Chatman—famously known as the "Godfather of Steppin'"—has passed away. In the 1970s on Chicago’s South Side, DJ Sam Chatman coined the term "Steppin'," shaping, preserving, and elevating a local dance culture into an internationally celebrated art form. Beyond his legendary turntable mastery, he was a cultural steward, a bridge between generations, a devoted husband, father, son, brother, a proud West Sider, and the father of ABC7 Chicago anchor Samantha Chatman. Last year, a street in West Pullman was officially dedicated in his honor. In this video, we honor his life, his incredible impact on Black culture and music history, and share the official statement from the Chatman family. presence and wisdom deeply shaped our family and our community."
