Description

Look closely at a map of Kazakhstan and you'll find a strange gap — a Delaware-sized zone where Russian law applies and rubles are the currency, even though it sits on Kazakh soil. This is Baikonur Cosmodrome, the world's first spaceport. The Soviets built it in 1955, and when the USSR collapsed, Russia refused to walk away. So they leased the whole complex for $115 million a year through 2050. The reason it's there at all comes down to physics: Baikonur sits far closer to the equator than Russia's own launch sites, so rockets get a bigger free push from Earth's spin and burn less fuel getting to orbit. That advantage was worth enough for Russia to keep paying rent on foreign ground for decades. #Kazakhstan #baikonur #Geography #Russia #spacerace #sovietunion #Cosmodrome #geographyfacts #mapfacts #spacehistory #geopolitics #learning #geographythroughmaps #geographyfacts #map #mapanimation #maps #shortvideo #shortsfeed #shorts
