Scientists Compared Ancient Egyptian Mummy DNA to Modern Arabs — One Result Changed Everything

Scientists have finally recovered a complete ancient Egyptian genome — and the results reveal a remarkable connection between the people of ancient Egypt and populations from North Africa and the ancient Fertile Crescent. For decades, researchers struggled to recover reliable DNA from Egyptian mummies. The heat, burial conditions, and mummification process made ancient Egyptian DNA one of the most difficult genetic records to study. That changed with the 2017 ancient Egyptian mummy DNA study, which analyzed genetic material from mummies discovered at Abusir el-Meleq.
