This is La Haine. One of the most realistic and influential crime films ever made, and by many considered one of the greatest French films of all time. La Haine is nothing like your traditional crime film. There are no glamorous gangsters, no heists and no rags-to-riches stories like Scarface. Instead, La Haine follows 24 hours in the lives of three friends growing up in the so-called banlieues, concrete housing projects on the outskirts of Paris. Director Matthieu Kassovitz didn't want to make just another fictional crime film. Inspired by real-life incidents of police brutality in France, he wanted to tell the story from the perspective of the young people who actually lived in these neighbourhoods. Today, I want to dive into the story of La Haine and show you how it became one of the most realistic and controversial crime films ever made.
