Description

Welcome to the beautiful coffee estates of Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, India's Coffee Capital. In this documentary, we explore Maragasi, a centuries-old traditional practice of pruning giant Silver Oak trees that provide shade for coffee plantations. Workers climb towering trees reaching 70–100 feet without modern safety equipment, relying only on experience, balance, and techniques passed down through generations. The tree cutters begin their work at 8:00 AM and continue until 1:30 PM, working continuously without taking a single break. Despite the extreme physical effort and high level of risk involved, a skilled worker typically earns around ₹1,300 per day. This unique practice allows sunlight to reach the coffee plants below while supporting three major sources of income for the estate: 🌳 Silver Oak timber ☕ Coffee cultivation 🌿 Black pepper vines growing on the trees Watch these skilled workers move from tree to tree with incredible agility while facing dangerous heights, biting ants, and life-threatening risks. To protect themselves from aggressive biting ants that nest in the trees, they apply ant powder before climbing. Sadly, this profession remains one of the most hazardous traditional occupations, with many workers losing their lives every year after accidental falls from great heights. Their work demands exceptional courage, balance, and years of experience. This video captures the hard work, dedication, and traditional knowledge behind one of India's lesser-known occupations. It is a tribute to the men who risk their lives every day to sustain the coffee plantations of Chikkamagaluru.
