Description

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are the only one of the Seven Wonders that has never been found — and the king supposedly behind them, Nebuchadnezzar, never mentioned them once in hundreds of inscriptions boasting about everything he built. Herodotus walked through Babylon and described every wall and gate in detail, yet said nothing about a man-made mountain of trees — and seventeen years of excavation found nothing but a probable storeroom. Then Oxford Assyriologist Stephanie Dalley spent two decades on the problem and reached a stunning conclusion: the gardens were real, but they stood in Nineveh, built a century earlier by the Assyrian king Sennacherib. His own inscriptions describe a garden “a wonder for all peoples,” watered by bronze screws 400 years before Archimedes — and the fifty-mile Jerwan aqueduct that fed it still stands in Iraqi Kurdistan with his name carved into it. When Nineveh was destroyed in 612 BC, its king was erased and his wonder reassigned to the city everyone remembered — while the reliefs showing the real garden sat in the British Museum the whole time, labelled as decoration.
