Description

In 2023, Stellantis had the best year of its short existence. Record profits. The group that owns Jeep, Ram, Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel, Vauxhall, Alfa Romeo and Maserati was, on paper, one of the most profitable carmakers on earth. Its chief executive, Carlos Tavares, was paid €36.5 million that year. Two years later, Stellantis reported a net loss of €22.3 billion. That is the largest loss in the company's history, stated in its own results release. So: record profit, then the biggest loss ever recorded by the business, inside twenty-four months, at a company that shipped slightly more vehicles in the second year than the first. Shipments in 2025 were up one percent. Same factories. Same brands. Same dealer network. Same number of cars going out of the gate. A swing of nearly twenty-eight billion euros in the result. That is not what a market downturn looks like. A downturn shows up as fewer cars sold. This company sold a few more. And the loss is not the damage. The loss is the invoice for undoing the damage. By the end of this you will know precisely what was broken, who published a warning about it fourteen months before the accounts caught up, what it has cost Italy's industrial base, and why the single clearest proof of what went wrong is an engine Stellantis just un-cancelled.
