Description
🔗 93 things every Appalachian grandfather knew. How many are left in you?
https://burlsizemore.com
My grandmother Ora Sizemore believed there were three creatures in these mountains that will only come near a person with a clean heart. Not a rich heart, and not a churchgoing heart. A clean one.
The wren, that looks a house over for a week before she will build in something of yours. The honeybees, that walked all over my grandmother's bare arms and ran a smooth talking man in a green Chevrolet clean off our hill. And the snowbird, the hardest one of all, that will only light on the open hand of somebody who is not holding onto anything.
When I was eleven years old, I laughed at her right in her own kitchen. I stopped laughing three times in my life, and the last time did not come until the winter after she was gone, standing on her back step in the snow.
My grandfather kept the farm ledger for most of his life, and down in the margins, in pencil, he wrote how a thing was done. My grandmother wrote her own things in the back of it, some of them about her bees. A few years back I sat down with that ledger and wrote out ninety three of the things he knew how to do with his hands, the way he would have told it to you on the porch.
So tell me down below. Which one of the three has ever come to you, the wren or the bees or the snowbird, and where did you grow up?
