Description
Every great nation of Native America fell. That part of the story everyone knows. The question is how, and the answer is never the same twice.
A city of mounds on the Mississippi, larger than any north of Mexico, emptied long before Columbus sailed. A Cherokee Nation with its own written language, constitution and newspaper won its case in the Supreme Court of the United States, and was removed anyway. The Lakota won the most famous battle of the Indian Wars, and lost the Black Hills within a year.
Tonight, we travel across seven centuries of Native American history, from a desert canyon in the 1100s to the dark hills of Dakota. We follow six great nations from their rise to their height to the moment everything changed. This isn't the single paragraph from the school textbook. It's the full story, told without invented heroes or invented villains.
You'll discover:
Chaco Canyon, where desert builders carried more than two hundred thousand trees across fifty miles of desert by hand
Cahokia, the forgotten city on the Mississippi, and the wall its people built around its heart
The Iroquois Confederacy, the League of Peace that held the balance between two empires
The Cherokee, who answered the United States with a syllabary, a printing press and a court case
The Comanche, masters of the southern plains, who were never defeated in a great battle
The Lakota, and the Black Hills money they still refuse to this day
The single thread that connects all six falls
What became of each nation, and where their people are today
This documentary covers the Ancestral Puebloans, the Mississippian city of Cahokia, the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), the Cherokee, the Comanche and the Lakota. It includes the Beaver Wars, the Trail of Tears, Red Cloud's War, the Red River War, the Battle of the Little Bighorn and the Treaty of Fort Laramie. Every story is told calmly, carefully and honestly.
