Description
Just before midnight on July 31, 1999, two teenage best friends made one wrong turn on their way home after a birthday party. Lost in an unfamiliar Alabama town, they stopped to ask for directions and called home to say they were on their way. They never made it back.
The next morning, 17-year-olds J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett were found murdered in the trunk of their car, leaving investigators with one of Alabama's most haunting unsolved cold cases. Detectives interviewed hundreds of witnesses, followed countless leads, and collected DNA evidence that pointed directly to the killer—but for decades, it matched no one.
More than two decades later, advances in forensic genetic genealogy finally identified a suspect who had lived an ordinary life less than a mile from where the victims' car was abandoned. A husband, father, and pastor, he had never been arrested before, allowing him to remain invisible to traditional DNA databases until science caught up.
