Description
A woman set her basket on my counter last week, a little proud of herself, and told me she'd stopped buying my shrimp — found a bigger bag at Walmart for less a pound. I didn't argue. But I've sold fish in this city for forty years, and that bag was not the deal she thought.
So here's the thing I bite my tongue on every week: stop buying shrimp by the pretty bag. Some of it's perfectly good shrimp — the trouble is the bag is built so you can't see what you're actually paying for.
In this one I lay it out on the glass the way I would for a customer:
• The TWO kinds of water in a shrimp bag — one honest, one you're paying shrimp prices for
• How the "count" number on the front is quietly lying about the size you'll get
• Why treated shrimp turns to rubber in your pan — and it was never your cooking
• The plain $4 bag I carry home, and the ONE word on the ingredient list to look for
• How to thaw it safe (never on the counter), and the 90-second way I actually cook it
Forty years behind cold glass, handed to you for nothing. Next time you're in that freezer aisle, pick up two bags and just read the backs. Once you've seen it, you're done needing me — and that's exactly how I want it.
Come tell me in the comments what the plain bag runs at your store. I'm always curious what the rest of the country is paying.
