15 Habits That Tell Burglars You Live Alone (Even With the Lights On)
The porch light is on. The hallway light is on. And a man on the sidewalk still knows exactly how many people live in that house.
Lights never told anybody how many people are inside. Habits do. And the people who live alone hand that information out every single day, usually without ever noticing they did it.
I'm Roy Callahan. Twenty-six years in police work, the first half in a patrol car and the back half in plainclothes working property crime, which mostly meant sitting across a table from men who broke into houses for a living and asking them how they picked. I expected them to talk about locks. They almost never did. They talked about reading a street.
In this video I'm counting down 15 habits that tell a burglar you live alone, lights and all, from the way your lights walk through the house one room at a time, to the single track shoveled through the snow, to the note stored in your delivery app that reads your work schedule out loud on your own porch. Number three is the one people are most surprised by, and number one is worth more than every lock I ever installed.
Almost none of the fixes cost money. A second lamp. A pair of boots you already own. An extra chair on the porch. One honest conversation with the neighbor across the street.
Watch to the end for the one habit that matters more than the other fourteen put together, and for the part of this that has nothing to do with burglars at all.
