Description
India is considering one of the boldest water projects on Earth: the Kalpasar Project, a proposed sea dyke across Gujarat’s Gulf of Khambhat that could transform part of the sea into a massive freshwater reservoir.
This video explores how the Kalpasar Dam could capture river water that currently flows into the Arabian Sea, supply drinking and irrigation water to drought-prone Saurashtra, and carry a major highway, railway and renewable-energy corridor across the gulf.
But building a barrier through an active tidal estuary comes with enormous challenges. Powerful currents, shifting sediment, marine construction, rising costs, fishing livelihoods and ecological risks could determine whether Kalpasar becomes a historic engineering achievement — or a megaproject that never moves beyond planning.
We also examine the Afsluitdijk in the Netherlands, India–Netherlands technical cooperation, the engineering studies behind Kalpasar, and why the project has remained under discussion for decades.
Would you trust a project this massive to be built as planned? Share your opinion in the comments.
Project specifications and estimates have changed across different studies and government updates. Figures shown in this video reflect publicly reported proposals available during production.
