Description
On a January morning in 1936, an explosion levelled a brick hall in Wheatley, Ontario, a fishing town on Lake Erie. Eighty-five years later, a few steps away, another blast tore through two buildings and hurt twenty people. The cause was under the main street: wells drilled during an oil and gas rush that began in Ontario in 1858, a year before Pennsylvania's. Ontario may have lost track of tens of thousands of wells like them.

This documentary follows the first commercial oil field in the world from the gum beds of Enniskillen Township to a hole under a Lake Erie main street. Charles Tripp and James Miller Williams at Oil Springs in 1858. John Shaw's gusher of 1862. Petrolia's wooden casings, pole-tool rigs and nitroglycerin. John Henry Fairbank's jerker line, still pumping after 160 years. Skunk oil, Herman Frasch and how Standard Oil bought Imperial. The hard oilers who took the Canadian rig to Galicia and Borneo, and William McGarvey, honoured by an emperor and ruined by a war. Then gas: Eugene Coste, the wells drilled in Wheatley in 1897, the 1936 explosion blamed on a heater, the 1951 local history that blamed a well, the 1993 sketch map drawn from residents' memories, the 2021 explosion, and the 2024 dig that found an undocumented wooden-cased well near the spot the sketch had marked. Dawn Hub, the Lake Erie gas wells, and the estimate that southwestern Ontario holds tens of thousands of wells nobody can find.
Sources include Parks Canada, the Oil Museum of Canada and Lambton County Museums, Ontario's Oil, Gas and Salt Resources Library, Heagle and Sealey in Geoscience Canada (2023), Environmental Research (2024), Environmental Science & Technology (2025), Duncan Hamilton's 2025 site investigation of the Wheatley explosion, the Kent Historical Society (1951), CBC News, The Globe and Mail, The Narwhal, Enbridge, and the Michigan Public Service Commission. Where the record is uncertain, on the 1936 cause, the number of Wheatley wells, and the households displaced in 2021, the narration says so.
