The Bloop, El Gran Maja and Behemoth are often shown as gigantic sea monsters, but their real origins are completely different. The Bloop started with a genuine underwater sound recorded in the Pacific in 1997. The huge creature associated with it came later, after people began imagining what could have made such a powerful noise. Scientists eventually linked the original sound to large ice-related events near Antarctica. El Gran Maja comes from modern monster fiction. Its enormous mouth, impossible scale and submarine comparisons are part of what made it so memorable online. Behemoth is much older. It appears in the Book of Job as a creature of immense strength, but the giant underwater version seen in modern monster videos is a later interpretation.
