Description

What if the British never left India in 1947? To answer the what, we gotta answer the how, and the how is honestly: they went broke. In World War II, over 2.5 million Indians served in the largest volunteer army in history, and Britain ran the war on credit. By 1945 Britain owed India about £1.3 billion (the sterling balances). Then in February 1946, about 20,000 Indian sailors of the Royal Indian Navy mutinied, starting in Bombay. They won India with wet gunpowder at Plassey, and lost it with an empty wallet. Flip that and they stay. The King is on your rupee note and 15 August is a normal school day. But every Indian gets a British passport, no visa queue for London. Kohli captains England and Lord's sells samosas. India had about eight times Britain's population, so India wins every vote, the Empire gets run from Delhi and the Kohinoor comes home. The British never left. They just report to us now. Would you take that deal? Tell us 👇 Part 4 of our India what-if series.
