Description

New York escaped the obesity epidemic while the rest of America got fat, and it did it on pizza. In the 2023 health survey, 34.4% of American adults were obese; in New York City it was 24.2%, and in the rest of New York State it was 30.8%. Same people, same pizza, 6 points apart at the city line. New York never stopped doing 5 things the rest of the country gave up: leaving the car, taking the stairs, shopping downstairs, carrying it home, and walking the last block. All 5 can be copied anywhere, and the video ends with the one number that explains why they work. "Escaped" means the city avoided the national cliff, not every case. It does not claim New York is the slimmest place in America. The 6% and 4.8% figures are associations from a cross-sectional study, not proof of cause, and they do not by themselves account for the 10-point gap. The New York City, rest-of-state and US figures are self-reported and are compared only with each other; the 15% to 40.8% national rise is from the measured survey and is a separate series.
