Description
Retiring early isn’t only about how much money you have saved. It is also about where your spending money will come from when the stock market falls.

In this video, I explain the three-bucket retirement strategy my wife and I use after I retired at 54. Our goal is to avoid being forced to sell stock investments during a major market downturn.
Our retirement bucket system includes:
• Approximately two years of expenses in cash
• Approximately four years of expenses in bonds and more stable investments
• The remainder invested for long-term growth
I also explain sequence-of-returns risk, how we would replenish our cash bucket during normal markets, what we would do differently during a down market, and how holding cash gives us added flexibility when managing taxable income, healthcare costs and MAGI.
This system cannot stop the market from falling. Its purpose is to keep a falling market from immediately controlling our spending decisions.
Do you currently use a bucket strategy—or are you considering one for retirement? Share your approach in the comments.
