Description
90 pounds. That is what your bug out bag weighs if you actually bought everything the internet told you to buy. 61 items. More than half your own body weight strapped to your spine. And here is the number that has never once appeared on a product page. You get about 7 miles. Then your pace collapses. Your willpower has nothing to do with it, which is the part that offends people. It happens to almost everybody at the same point, and after it happens, you are not walking out of anything. So let's empty that bag onto the floor and make every item argue for its own weight before it goes back in. Here is what is in there. The pack itself. 5 pounds empty. Black nylon. Molly webbing stitched across every surface because, apparently, rescue only arrives for people who look like they are clearing a compound. Sleeping bag. Tent. Sleeping pad. Three liters of water. A stove. A fuel canister. A cook pot. And a titanium spork. Because the steel one was heavy. Three days of food. Spare clothes. A rain shell. A second pair of boots because a man on the internet with a beard said so. A fixed blade knife. A hatchet. A folding saw. An entrenching tool. A multi-tool with pliers on it. That is four cutting implements and a shovel, and we are not halfway down the pile yet. 30 meters of paracord. A tarp. A first aid kit. A headlamp. A tactical flashlight rated at 1,000 lumens, which is a car headlight strapped to your fist in a scenario where the entire point is that nobody can see you. Spare batteries. A folding solar panel. A power bank. A radio. A gas mask. Two steel armor plates. A rifle. 200 rounds of ammunition. 61 items. 90 pounds. Most of them are about to lose. Body armor loses. The rifle loses. Your water filter loses. And the reason why is going to genuinely upset some of you. 61 becomes 5. And the 5 are not the 5 you are expecting. One of them costs about $12. It is sitting in your sock drawer right now, and you have never once thought of it as survival equipment. Get the bag. We are doing this the hard way. Let's start with the part the gear industry has spent 30 years hoping you never look up. There is an entire branch of military science called load carriage. It has been funded, tested, and published since the 1950s because armies have a very direct financial interest in knowing how much a person can carry before he stops being a soldier and starts being cargo. In 1950, an American brigadier general named S.L.A. Marshall wrote a book about exactly this. His conclusion was blunt. The load a man carries into a fight should not exceed one-thi
