Description
Switzerland spent the entire Second World War proudly declaring itself neutral. Surrounded on every side by Axis territory, the small Alpine republic claimed it stood above the conflict. But behind the vaults of Zurich, Geneva, and Bern, a very different story was unfolding. Between January 1939 and June 1945, Nazi Germany transferred roughly $400 million in gold to the Swiss National Bank, worth around $3.9 billion today. The SNB alone purchased about $276 million of it. The Bergier Commission later concluded that Switzerland's total take from the Nazis reached around $440 million, roughly $4 billion today, of which $316 million had been violently looted from the central banks of occupied Europe and, in some cases, from the mouths and fingers of Holocaust victims.
This video unpacks one of the most uncomfortable chapters of twentieth century finance. Why did a neutral democracy become the single biggest customer of the Third Reich's stolen gold? How did Swiss bankers justify their actions as extermination camps filled with victims whose wedding rings and dental gold were being melted and shipped to Bern? What was the Melmer account, and how did SS Hauptsturmführer Bruno Melmer's deliveries end up laundered through the global economy? Why did the 1946 Washington Agreement let Switzerland walk away by returning only $58 million? And how did it take fifty years, the collapse of the Soviet Union, a UBS security guard named Christoph Meili, Senator Alfonse D'Amato, Undersecretary Stuart Eizenstat, and a $1.25 billion settlement signed on August 12, 1998, before the truth finally became undeniable?
We examine Operation Tannenbaum, the Nazi invasion plan that never came. We follow the credit lines, the electricity exports, the aluminum, the tungsten, and the chromium that made the Swiss franc the lifeline of the Nazi war machine. We trace the Bergier Commission's findings on private banks, revealing that Swiss Bank Corporation purchased $36.6 million in Nazi gold, Union Bank of Switzerland bought $8.5 million, and Credit Suisse took $1.8 million. And we end with the hard question: can money, no matter how quietly it moves, ever truly wash the blood off itself?
