Description
What if humanity's fastest spacecraft still couldn't cross a single light-year in a human lifetime? In this video, we break down why interstellar travel is so much harder than it sounds — and just how far (or how little) one light-year actually gets you in space.
We look at real spacecraft and real numbers: New Horizons, the fastest launch speed ever achieved, would take about 18,000 years to travel one light-year. The Parker Solar Probe, the fastest human-made object ever recorded, would still need roughly 1,500 years. Even Breakthrough Starshot, a theoretical laser-sail concept designed to reach 20% of the speed of light, would take almost five years just to cover that same one light-year.
We also explain why speed alone can't solve interstellar travel — from Earth's escape velocity, to the sun's gravity, to the Oort Cloud, to interstellar dust, radiation, and the massive energy problem no rocket has solved. Then we zoom out to show what one light-year actually buys you on a galactic scale, compared to Proxima Centauri, the nearest star, and the Milky Way itself.
If you're into space, astronomy, astrophysics, and the science of interstellar travel, this one's for you.
