Description

Before radar, Britain tried to hear bombers coming with giant concrete "sound mirrors." Here's how acoustic mirrors worked, and why they still stand. 👂 Acoustic mirrors, also called sound mirrors, were concave concrete structures built mainly from the 1910s to the 1930s along Britain's coast. The curved surface reflected distant engine noise to a single focal point, where a trained listener with a microphone and headset could judge the direction of approaching aircraft. The best-known examples are the Denge sound mirrors near Dungeness in Kent: a 20-foot dish, a 30-foot dish, and a 200-foot curved wall. They were developed by Dr. William Sansome Tucker, but faster aircraft and background noise limited their usefulness. After a 1935 experiment showed that radio waves could detect aircraft, Britain built the Chain Home radar network, and the mirrors were abandoned. Many survive today as protected monuments. 📚 Sources: - Historic England, listing for the Denge sound mirrors - Richard Scarth, "Echoes from the Sky: A Story of Acoustic Defence" - Imperial War Museums, sound mirrors and early air defence - Romney Marsh Countryside Partnership, Denge site information 🔔 Follow for more forgotten WWII-era stories they never taught you. #SoundMirrors #AcousticMirrors #History #HistoryShorts #WWII #Shorts #AncientHistory #Civilizations #Documentary #HistoryDocumentary
