Description
15 POOR MAN'S Tricks to Grow a Ton of Onions in One Container or Garden Bed
This spring, somewhere down your holler, somebody paid four dollars for a little plastic tray of six onion seedlings. That same week they threw out the cracked bucket, the grass clippings, and the roots off their green onions. That was the whole onion farm, neighbor. You already owned it.
My mama grew onions in a cracked mop bucket on the back porch and never once paid for a single one. No seedling trays, no bagged feed, no fancy planter from the catalog. Just a handful of seed, a bucket of kitchen compost, and a few hard rules she would not bend. These are her fifteen tricks, and none of them costs more than the walk to your shed.
In this video:
The cracked bucket: a raised onion planter for free, because onions hate wet feet
The compost pile: the only feed your onions need (and the one rule about manure)
Let them go hungry: why too much fertilizer gives you tall green tops and marble-sized bulbs
Free mulch: grass clippings, leaves, and straw instead of weed barrier fabric
The seed itself: one $3 packet makes hundreds of onions; the $4 tray makes six
Sow too much on purpose, then fill the bare spots with a spoon
The paper towel test: find out whether old seed is still alive before you lose a season
The calendar: why onions belong in the driest, coolest part of your year
The sunlight clock: short-day and long-day onions, and the small print on the packet that decides everything
The Egyptian walking onion: plant it once and it walks across your bed for life
The crisper drawer: regrowing store-bought green onions and shallots
Crowd them in: why Mama ignored the ten-inch spacing rule
Thin with a fork: eating your harvest from the second week on
Let one go to flower: next year's seed for free
The lie almost every gardener was taught: you do NOT need to bend or break the tops. The onion knows when it is done. Plus how to cure your harvest so it keeps for months.
⚠️ The one hard rule: when the tops fall over, the water stops. A wet curing onion rots in the pantry by winter.
Walk the garden aisle once with honest eyes and you will see it. The planter, the fertilizer, the weed fabric, the seedling tray, the starter sets. It is your own garden with a barcode on it.
This week, before trash day, rescue three things: one cracked bucket, one shovel of compost, and one bunch of green onion roots. That is your onion farm.
Tell me in the comments the onion trick YOUR mama or granny swore by, the one I did not put on this list. And tell me your county too. I read every one.
Next time, the promise gets kept: one slice of a store tomato turned into a whole summer of plants. Bring a ripe one.
