Description

Tea feels inseparable from everyday Indian life — from railway stations and roadside stalls to family conversations and “chai pe charcha.” But the story of Indian chai is far more complicated than it seems. Tea originated in China, and for centuries China controlled much of the world's tea trade. Britain's growing obsession with tea created a massive economic problem, leading to trade manipulation, the opium trade, and eventually conflict with China. Then came one of history's most fascinating chapters: Robert Fortune, a Scottish botanist who entered China's tea-growing regions in disguise to study tea production and secretly transport tea plants, seeds, and skilled craftsmen to India. But there was another twist. Tea was already growing naturally in Assam. From Assam's indigenous tea traditions to Darjeeling's Chinese tea plants, from colonial plantations to British attempts to create a tea-drinking culture in India, the story eventually reaches the humble Indian chaiwala. And that's where everything changed. Indian vendors rejected the simple British method of preparing tea and began combining tea with milk, sugar, ginger, cardamom, cloves, black pepper and other spices — creating the masala chai culture we know today. This is the story of how a drink introduced through colonial trade eventually became something deeply Indian. From China → to Britain → to colonial India → to the Indian chai stall → and finally to the world. Watch till the end to discover how India's ordinary tea sellers transformed a foreign commercial product into one of the country's most recognizable cultural symbols.
