Description

There is a railroad in North Carolina that climbs, in places, almost five feet for every hundred feet it runs. No standard gauge main line in the United States was ever built steeper. The grade is three miles long. Trains worked it for 123 years, until December 2001. For much of that time, a man stood at a switch halfway down the mountain, day and night, with orders to leave it set so every train coming down went off the main line and up a dead end into the hillside. Not the trains in trouble. Every train. To stay on the main line, the engineer had to ask. IF YOU ARE GOING UP THERE As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. North Carolina Atlas and Gazetteer (DeLorme) - US 176 between Tryon and Saluda has been closed since Hurricane Helene, with repairs scheduled to run to 2029, so this is how you plan the way round: https://link.amazon/B0845ecCq WHERE IT IS The Saluda Grade runs about three miles from Melrose, at the foot of the Blue Ridge, up to the town of Saluda in Polk County, North Carolina. Saluda is exit 59 on Interstate 26. US 176 between Tryon and Saluda has been closed since Hurricane Helene in 2024. Use Interstate 26. The corridor belongs to the Saluda Grade Trails Conservancy and none of it is open to the public yet. The rails are still in place, including through the middle of Saluda, and bids are out to take them up. Stay off the track. The Saluda Historic Depot, 32 West Main Street, is a free museum with a model of the grade and its runaway tracks. Open Thursday to Sunday, noon to 4, April to December. Saluda is pronounced suh-LOO-duh. A NOTE ON THE IMAGES The research and the script are mine, from primary records and archives, and the sources are listed below. Where no photograph of a place survives, and for this channel that is often, the images are period material from elsewhere rather than the place itself. And if anyone has the page of the rule book that told a watchman when he could throw the switch, I would very much like to know it still exists. Comment or write to [email protected]. Old Alignment.
