A Night of Splendor | Spring in Jade Pavilion Ambient Music

A night of music, beauty, wine, and fading memories in the elegant world of the Southern Tang court. Inspired by Li Yu and his ci poem Spring in Jade Pavilion, this long-form traditional Chinese ambient suite evokes the beauty and melancholy of an evening filled with music, dancing, candlelight, and wine. The visual companion is The Night Revels of Han Xizai, traditionally attributed to Gu Hongzhong. Li Yu and Han Xizai belonged to the same Southern Tang court: Li Yu was its last ruler, while Han Xizai was a prominent court official. According to the traditional account surrounding the painting, Li Yu became concerned about Han Xizai's private life and sent the court painter Gu Hongzhong to observe one of his nighttime gatherings. The resulting handscroll preserves an extraordinary vision of music, dance, wine, musicians, guests, and the complex emotions beneath a night of apparent pleasure. This historical connection makes the painting an especially fitting visual companion to Li Yu's poetry. Both belong to the same world of Southern Tang court culture—a world of exquisite music, refined beauty, artistic achievement, and the quiet awareness of a fragile political age. Featuring guqin, pipa, guzheng, xiao, dizi, sheng, ruan, konghou, and restrained traditional percussion, the album evokes palace lanterns, embroidered robes, wine cups, musicians, dancers, moonlit courtyards, and distant music fading into the night. Blending classical Chinese poetry, traditional Chinese instrumental music, Southern Tang court culture, and the visual poetry of ancient painting, this album is a meditation on beauty, pleasure, memory, and impermanence.
