Description
My name is Darlene Hollis. I cooked in a school kitchen for thirty-five years, six ovens running five days a week, feeding four hundred children a day, on a budget with no room for fancy products.
You know how it goes. You get on your knees with a spray can that tells you to wear gloves and ventilate the room. An hour later your arm aches and the corners are still not clean. That was never your fault. It was the wrong method.
Most of us believe a dirty oven is a fight. That black crust does not need force. It needs time and moisture. Baking soda is an alkali, and hard-baked grease is exactly what an alkali takes apart. The water in the paste creeps into every crack all night. You are not scrubbing dirt. You are softening a glue until it lets go.
Half a cup of baking soda and two or three tablespoons of water go inside a cold oven for twelve hours. In the morning it wipes off like wet cake. The spray can ran me about six dollars, four times a year. A dollar and a quarter box of soda covers three or four cleanings. Call it two dollars a year against twenty-four.
In this video I show you how thick to mix the paste, the two places to skip, how to lift stubborn spots with an old gift card, how vinegar clears white streaks, how to soak the racks in the bathtub, how to clean the door glass in thirty minutes, and how one sheet pan saves you the big job.
I also tell you where it falls short. An oven left five or six years may need a second night, and this will not make a twenty-year-old oven look like it came off the truck.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED
Baking soda, one pound box, $1.25
Water
White vinegar in a dollar store spray bottle, $1.25
An old paintbrush
Damp rags
A plastic spatula or an old gift card
Dish soap and an old towel for the racks
A WORD OF CAUTION
Start with the oven stone cold. Keep the paste off bare heating elements and the rubber door gasket. Do not line the oven floor with foil, because it can block airflow or fuse onto the element. Never put water or flour on a grease fire. Use a lid or baking soda.
Subscribe and I will keep putting up the old kitchen ways that quit getting taught.
