Description

Meet Billy the Kid's mother, Catherine McCarty Antrim—the determined mother behind one of the most famous names in Wild West history. Before Henry McCarty became Billy the Kid, Catherine was a working mother, businesswoman and property owner fighting to build a stable life for her two sons. This historical documentary follows the surviving evidence of Catherine’s life while separating documented facts from legend. We examine the mystery surrounding her birth and maiden name, her years in Indianapolis, her move to Wichita, Kansas, and her place as the only woman among 124 signers of Wichita’s 1870 incorporation petition. Catherine operated the City Laundry, acquired property and carried Henry and Josie west through hardship and worsening illness. Her journey eventually led the family through Santa Fe and into Silver City, New Mexico Territory, where she died from tuberculosis on September 16, 1874. What happened to Henry McCarty after losing his mother? Did Catherine’s death help shape the boy who became Billy the Kid—or has history forced a simple explanation onto a far more complicated life? The evidence shows that Catherine’s loss changed Henry’s world. It cannot prove that her death created the outlaw. Billy made choices of his own. This is Catherine McCarty Antrim’s story: not merely the mother of Billy the Kid, but a determined nineteenth-century woman whose work, property records and surviving documents deserve attention of their own. Evidence featured includes Wichita property records, the 1870 incorporation petition, an 1871 City Laundry advertisement, the 1873 Santa Fe marriage record and surviving accounts of Catherine’s life and death.
