Description
In 49 winters the power has gone out on this ridge 31 times. The longest was nine days in a February.
This house has never thrown out one package from the freezer. Not one.
I'm Ruth Sawyer. I've kept a logger's house on Sawyer Ridge, Pocahontas County, West Virginia, since 1977,
and every dollar this house ever spent is in a ledger on the shelf behind me.
These are the 12 things I do before the first ice storm: the jugs that fill the empty space, the
thermometer, the penny in the cup, freezer paper and the list on the lid, two loaf pans of ice, the rule
that the lid stays shut, the quilts, the cooler, the north porch, the hand can opener, and the one thing
about generators that sends people to the hospital every winter. For each one I read you the receipt,
what it cost then, and what it costs now.
Tell me in the comments what your mother or grandmother did the night the power went out, your county,
and what she called it. The one with the most comments is the one I open the can for next.
Ruth Sawyer is brought to life with the help of modern AI tools. The prices, the receipts and the methods
are real and checked. Food safety times follow the USDA guidance for power outages. I'm not an
electrician. A generator goes outside, away from the house, every time. When in doubt, throw it out.
This isn't a homemaking channel. It's a ledger somebody kept for 49 years.
Write it down, friend. Paper remembers.
