Richard Marcinko built his career by going where others would not and breaking rules the Navy considered untouchable. After earning a fearsome reputation as a SEAL officer in Vietnam, Marcinko became involved in the aftermath of the disastrous Iranian hostage rescue attempt, an experience that helped convince the Pentagon it needed permanent forces dedicated to counterterrorism. The Navy then gave Marcinko the opportunity to build one from scratch: SEAL Team 6. He personally selected roughly 80 operators, created an unconventional training culture, gave his men extraordinary freedom, and even chose the number “6” to fool Soviet intelligence into believing America had more SEAL teams than actually existed. But Marcinko's strangest assignment came afterward with Red Cell, a secret team ordered to attack American military installations and expose their vulnerabilities. His men kidnapped commanders, infiltrated supposedly secure bases, planted mock explosives aboard a nuclear submarine, and even demonstrated how easily Air Force One could be attacked while sitting on the ground. Yet the same disregard for rules that made Marcinko so effective eventually became his downfall, as controversial Red Cell exercises, investigations, and a fraud conviction sent him to federal prison. This is the remarkable story of Richard “Demo Dick” Marcinko, the renegade Navy SEAL who created SEAL Team 6, attacked his own military to expose its weaknesses, and became one of the most celebrated and controversial figures in American special operations history. - As images and footage of actual events are not always available, Dark Docs sometimes utilizes similar historical images and footage for dramatic effect.
