Construction began in 2006, and the massive station officially opened on August 1, 2008. The enormous elliptical structure covers around 320,000 square meters and was built using more than 60,000 tonnes of steel and 490,000 cubic meters of concrete. Its huge roof also features 3,246 solar panels designed to generate electricity. With 24 railway platforms and connections to China's high-speed rail network, Beijing South Railway Station became a major transportation hub for routes including the Beijing–Shanghai and Beijing–Tianjin high-speed railways.
