Description
What really happened to Emperor Tewodros II's only son after British troops dragged him out of a burning Ethiopian mountain fortress and shipped him to Queen Victoria's England? This is the forgotten true story of Prince Alemayehu, the orphaned Ethiopian heir who should have become King of Kings, but instead died alone in a Leeds terraced house at 18, and was buried in the catacombs of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where his body still lies today despite over a hundred and forty years of Ethiopian demands for his return.
In this deep dive we uncover the full history behind one of the most unsettling human stories of the Victorian empire. The rise of Emperor Tewodros II, born Kassa Hailu around 1818, the warrior king who ended the Zemene Mesafint, the Era of the Princes, and crowned himself King of Kings on 11 February 1855. The diplomatic insult of his ignored 1862 letter to Queen Victoria. The British hostages. The staggering 1867 to 1868 Napier Expedition, 62,000 men, 36,000 animals, 44 war elephants hauled across the Ethiopian highlands to one mountain fortress. The Battle of Arogee on 10 April 1868, the storming of Magdala on 13 April 1868, and the suicide of Tewodros with a pistol reportedly gifted to him by Queen Victoria herself.
Then the aftermath nobody talks about. The looting of 349 Ethiopian manuscripts, the sacred tabots the British Museum still refuses to display, and the clothing of Empress Tiruwork Wube now sitting in the storerooms of the Victoria and Albert Museum. The death of the Empress on 16 May 1868 on the march to the coast. The seven year old orphan, born 23 April 1861, placed under the guardianship of Captain Tristram Speedy. The meetings with Queen Victoria at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron and Jabez Hughes in July 1868. The years in India. The cold English schools, Lockers Park, Cheltenham College under Thomas Jex-Blake, Rugby School under Cyril Ransome, father of Swallows and Amazons author Arthur Ransome. The isolation at Sandhurst. The final weeks at 1 Hollin Lane, Far Headingley, Leeds. The reported fear of poisoning. His death on 14 November 1879. His burial on 21 November 1879 with General Napier, the man who destroyed his father, standing at the graveside.
And the fight that will not end. Ethiopia's 2007 request to Queen Elizabeth II. The 2021 Magdala restitution ceremony in London. The 2023 Buckingham Palace refusal to repatriate his remains. Why the royal household says moving him is impossible. Why his descendants say he was never a guest, he was a captive, and still is.
This is not just the biography of one boy. It is the story of how an empire sanitizes conquest with charity, and why the Magdala plunder is still one of the most explosive unresolved debts of the colonial era.
Watch to the end to understand why Prince Alemayehu, dead for over a century and a half, is still shaping the diplomatic conversation between London and Addis Ababa today.
