Description
A few months ago I said Sicilians call it gravy and Neapolitans call it sauce. Then your comments came in, from Sicilian families who call it sauce and Neapolitan families who call it gravy. So I went back and did it properly.
These are fifteen things Sicilian and Neapolitan families really did argue about, each one backed by a source. What you call the kids. Arancini, and why Palermo and Catania can't even agree on the name. Round pizza or square. The 1848 revolt against Naples. Struffoli against cuccidati, capitone on Christmas Eve, pastiera against cassata, Saint Joseph's Day, cannoli against sfogliatella, who invented eggplant parm, the Sunday ragù, San Gennaro against Santa Rosalia, and the streets of Little Italy a block apart. Number two finally settles gravy or sauce. Number one is a real family lasagna war that, in one nephew's words, never really ended.
