In 1999, high in the Andes atop Mount Llullaillaco—more than 22,000 feet above sea level—archaeologists uncovered an undisturbed tomb containing the exceptionally preserved body of this Inca girl. Known as the Inca Maiden, she was found frozen in time, looking almost as if she had simply fallen asleep over 500 years ago.
