Description
What really happened to the Motown legends when Berry Gordy moved the company from Detroit to Los Angeles?
For more than a decade, Detroit was the beating heart of Motown Records. From Hitsville U.S.A. came some of the greatest voices and groups in R&B history. But when Motown's headquarters moved west in 1972, the company entered a new era — and the careers of many Detroit-era legends changed forever.
In this R&B ZOOM documentary, we revisit 15 Motown legends connected to the Detroit era, including The Marvelettes, The Contours, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Gladys Knight & The Pips, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross.
From “Please Mr. Postman” and “Do You Love Me” to “What’s Going On,” “Superstition,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” these songs tell the story of an extraordinary musical empire — and the artists who had to find their way when that empire changed.
Some left Motown. Some stayed. Some found even greater success. Others struggled to regain the spotlight.
This is the story of Detroit's Motown generation — and what happened when Hitsville began looking west.
