Description
Deep in the remote mountains of rural Afghanistan, Soraya and Farid live a simple off-grid life inside an ancient natural cave carved into rugged stone. With no electricity, modern kitchen or conventional cooking equipment, the couple prepares a traditional meal using only basic handmade tools, a clay tandoor and wood fire. Soraya carefully prepares and marinates a whole chicken with garlic, onion, lemon, turmeric, cumin and coriander, while Farid heats their traditional tandoor with dry mountain firewood. Fresh wheat dough is kneaded by hand, left to rise and shaped into Afghan naan before each bread is pressed directly onto the hot clay wall of the tandoor. The marinated chicken is then suspended over glowing coals on traditional iron skewers and slowly roasted until golden-brown. As the meal comes together, this documentary-style film captures the quiet atmosphere of cave life, traditional Afghan fire cooking, rugged mountain surroundings and the simple daily routine of a poor rural couple living far from modern conveniences. Natural sounds of fire, wind, bread, cooking and the surrounding mountains create an immersive rural Afghanistan experience.
