Description
At 2,716 feet tall, the Burj Khalifa faces a plumbing challenge unlike almost any other building. A single pump would create enormous pressure near the bottom of the tower, so engineers designed a complex system of pressure zones, break tanks, booster pumps and variable-speed drives.
In this engineering documentary, we explore how water moves upward stage by stage, how comfortable pressure is maintained at every faucet, and why the tower contains approximately 62 miles of domestic water pipes.
We also look inside its separate fire-suppression network, chilled-water cooling system and condensation recovery system—and examine how these engineering lessons could be pushed even further inside Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower.
This is not ordinary plumbing. It is city-scale infrastructure built vertically inside the world’s tallest skyscraper.
Watch until the end to discover what really happens hundreds of feet below whenever someone turns on a tap near the top of the tower.
