Description
The Dover Fault tells a story that goes back hundreds of millions of years—to a time when ancient continents collided and helped shape the Newfoundland we know today.
In this video, Larry takes us to the Dover Fault Lookout and shares the geology behind the fault, the plate tectonics that created this remarkable area, and his own story of helping develop the lookout.
He also shares local history surrounding the 1929 Grand Banks earthquake and tsunami, including stories he gathered from people in Dover who experienced the shaking, noise and unusual water firsthand.
But we don’t stop at the lookout.
We head out on the water to see the geology from a completely different angle, investigate a gossan zone just off the Dover Fault, and finish at the Gates of Pit Sound, where a related fault structure takes us right back to what prospectors look for in the field.
For us, geology isn’t just something you read on a map. You go out and see it for yourself.
