Description

April 27, 2011. For many people in Alabama, it began like any other spring day. But by the afternoon, the sky had turned into something terrifying. Out of a massive storm system emerged a monster — the Hackleburg–Phil Campbell tornado, one of the most violent ever recorded in the United States. Classified as an EF5, it tore across northern Alabama with winds exceeding 210 miles per hour. Entire neighborhoods vanished. Schools, factories, and homes were reduced to splinters in seconds. For 102 miles, the tornado carved a path of destruction through small towns and rural communities. Seventy-one people lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest tornadoes of the 21st century in America. But the story of this storm is not only about devastation. It’s also about the people who survived — the ones who watched their world disappear in minutes, and somehow found the strength to rebuild it again.
