Description

In this video, I take you through some of the most horrifying distances in the universe — starting with the relatively tiny gap between Earth and the Moon, before stretching outward to the Sun, the edge of our Solar System, and the nearest star. We’ll see why even our closest stellar neighbour is almost impossibly far away, how enormous the empty spaces between stars really are, and what it would take to cross the Milky Way. From there, the distances become increasingly difficult to comprehend — from the 2.5 million light-years separating us from Andromeda, to the vast emptiness of the Boötes Void and the enormous structures of the cosmic web. Finally, we reach the largest scales we can observe: the observable universe itself, and the cosmic horizon beyond which expansion can make entire regions of the universe permanently unreachable. By the end, distances measured in millions and billions of light-years start to make even our entire Solar System look microscopic. Some astronomical distances, travel-time comparisons and cosmological concepts have been simplified to make them easier to understand, and some values may vary slightly depending on how a boundary or distance is defined. The goal is to spark your curiosity, not replace proper research. Bluntly Explained explores the most extreme objects, events and mysteries in the universe — explained simply, visually and without the fluff.
