Description

Every part of this horse is a real country at its true size: Yemen is the body, Syria the neck, South Korea the head, Portugal the tail, Cuba the front leg, Brunei the ear and Togo the back leg. Togo fits its leg by only 55.5%, the worst fit on the horse, and Nepal (54.8%) wants its job. How it was fitted: the horse's outline was cut into seven parts. Each country's mainland outline (equal-area, true relative size) was turned, flipped and nudged to cover each part, and the fit is how much the two shapes overlap (intersection over union). The horse's size is the one free number: about 1.06 million km². Nepal comes second for both legs (54.8% and 57.2%), and Trinidad and Tobago is a close second for the ear (61.6% to Brunei's 63.2%). On the globe at the end every piece is drawn at the same scale as on the horse. Which animal should we build out of countries next? 👇 Earth images: NASA Blue Marble. Borders: Natural Earth.
