Ravana’s Journey for Mahadev | The Forgotten Origin of Kanwar Yatra 🔱 Why do devotees carry sacred Gangajal across long and difficult paths to offer it to Mahadev? And what does the legendary Shiva devotee Ravana have to do with this sacred tradition? This cinematic story takes us back to the time of **Samudra Manthan**, when the Devas and Asuras joined forces to churn the cosmic ocean in search of Amrit — the nectar of immortality. But before Amrit appeared, the deadly **Halahal Vish** emerged from the ocean. Its power was so destructive that it threatened the entire creation. When no one could stop it, **Mahadev stepped forward to save the universe**. Lord Shiva accepted the Halahal and held the poison in His throat. With Mata Parvati’s intervention, the poison remained in His throat, and Mahadev came to be revered as **Neelkanth**. This sacrifice of Mahadev is traditionally associated with the devotional practice of offering cool and sacred water to Shiva — an expression of **Bhakti, gratitude and surrender**. The story then returns to **Lankesh Ravana**, one of Mahadev’s most devoted worshippers. While reading about the events of Samudra Manthan, Ravana learns how his Aaradhya accepted Halahal to protect creation. Deeply moved by Mahadev’s sacrifice, Ravana makes a sacred vow. He decides to personally bring holy water from Maa Ganga and perform Mahadev’s Abhishek. Leaving behind the royal comforts of Golden Lanka, Ravana places the Kanwar upon his shoulders and begins his journey. No royal chariot. No army. No luxury. Only difficult paths, unwavering determination and the name of **Mahadev** in his heart. After a long journey, Ravana finally reaches the sacred Maa Ganga. He fills both vessels with Gangajal, lifts the heavy Kanwar once again and begins the difficult journey back to Lanka. Upon reaching his Shiva temple, Ravana takes the sacred Gangajal he carried across the long journey and performs **Jalabhishek of the Shivling with complete devotion**.
