Description
In 1511, as Portuguese cannons bombarded Malacca, one of the richest ports in the world was home to Gujarati, Tamil, and Bengali merchants, and nobody could say how deep the Indian roots in the Malay world really went. After 500 years, DNA is finally answering that question. In this video, we follow the genetic evidence of Indian ancestry in Malaysia, from the Orang Asli forest communities to the Munda people of central India, and reveal why scientists say the Malay Peninsula was a crossroads of ancient Asia.
We trace three great waves of ancestry: the Hoabinhian hunter-gatherers and Perak Man, the Neolithic farmers who arrived about 4,000 years ago, and the Indian maritime traders whose influence surged after the first century. You will learn about the Bujang Valley temples in Kedah, the Chola expedition to Kadaram, the surprising genetic link between the Munda and the Orang Asli, what mitochondrial and nuclear DNA each reveal, the Jakun genome study, and the Chitty community of Malacca. We also explain why Malaysians carry Indian ancestry as a minority component and what scientists still do not know.
