This is the story of the xianggong — Beijing opera boys trained to perform female roles by day and serve wealthy patrons by night — told through your eyes. In this animated dark history video we follow the life of a xianggong from the moment an opera master walks into a Beijing hutong alley and notices your face, through seven years of debt-bonded training, through the curtained boxes of the Eighth Hutong theater district, through the slow fading of your beauty and everything that fading costs you, to a death alone on a winter street outside the theater that used you and replaced you without pausing.
