Why did Italy attack Libya in 1911? Italy wanted a colony in North Africa, while Britain already had Egypt and France had Algeria and Tunisia. So Italy looked at Ottoman controlled Libya. In 1911, Italy declared war, landed troops at Tripoli, captured the Libyan coast city by city, and then struck the Aegean. The Dodecanese islands fell, and the Ottoman Empire was forced to make peace.
