Description

👉 How to find out what your things are really worth → https://mrwalterashford.com The box comes down off the shelf at about four in the afternoon, and the afternoon stops. 📷 Somebody sits on the floor with it. Then somebody else does. An hour later the furniture has not been decided, the china has not been decided, nothing has been decided, and four adults are passing photographs back and forth saying who is that, and no, that is not her, and that has to be the farm. I have learned to go and look at something else and leave them to it, because that hour is the best hour anybody in that house is going to have all week. ⭐ AND THE DETAIL THAT REFRAMES EVERYTHING: I have talked about who is IN your photographs before. Tonight is not that. Tonight is what the photograph physically IS — because mixed into that box there is a real chance that several of the things you are holding are not photographs on paper at all. They are on glass, or on iron, or on silvered copper, and they are between a hundred and a hundred and seventy years old, and there are people who buy them who have no idea who your family is and do not care. Seven clues. All physical. All checkable in one evening with a lamp: 📏 The card it is stuck to is a date — and the little tax stamp on the back of some of them narrows it to about two years, which is a rare thing in this trade. 🧲 The easiest test in the whole business: hold a magnet to it. Paper does not pull. Glass does not pull. Iron does — and there are tintypes the size of a postage stamp loose in the bottom of that box that nobody recognises as photographs at all. 🪞 The one that looks like a mirror, where the image flips from negative to positive as you tilt it. Nothing else on earth does that. 🔨 The single biggest multiplier in early photography, and it is not the face. It is what the person brought with them — the carpenter with his plane, the blacksmith with his tongs. Look at the hands and the edges of the frame, not the faces. 🚫 And the honest half: the great majority of a box of loose twentieth-century snapshots has no market at all and never will. I am not going to build you a fantasy out of the thing you most want to be told. Number one is not a thing to find. It is a thing not to do, and families do it every single time with the best intentions in the world. Turn it over. Read the bottom. Believe what it tells you. 📕📗📘 The three books — Turn It Over · Never Take the First Offer · The Ashford Ledger https://mrwalterashford.com
