Description
For decades, the Chicago Outfit’s influence reached far beyond gambling dens and nightclubs. It extended into an industry few people would suspect: movie theaters.
By controlling powerful projectionists’ unions, mob-connected figures could decide who operated the equipment inside Chicago’s cinemas. Theater owners who resisted faced strikes, intimidation, vandalism—and sometimes something far more violent.
When one cinema owner installed automatic projectors, he threatened to eliminate the expensive union jobs the Outfit depended upon. To him, the machines represented progress. To the mob, they represented lost money, weakened control and an example that other theater owners might follow.
Then an explosive message arrived.
A grenade was thrown into the theater, transforming a dispute over new technology into an act of terror. The attack was intended to prove that no machine—and no independent owner—could replace the men protected by Chicago’s underworld.
Why was the Outfit so deeply invested in movie projectionists? How did mobsters use labor unions to extort theater owners and major Hollywood studios? And how far were they prepared to go to stop technology from destroying one of their most profitable rackets?
This is the forgotten story of the cinema owner who tried to modernize his theater—and discovered that the Chicago Outfit controlled far more than what appeared on the screen.
